Digital for Trades

What SEO actually is, why it matters for your trade business, and how it brings in more work.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. In plain terms, it means making your website and online presence show up when someone searches for what you do on Google.

Think of Google like a phone book that almost everyone uses before they call anyone. If you're not in it, or you're buried on page five, you might as well not exist. SEO is the work that gets you to the top of that phone book so the right people find you first.

It's not about tricks or gaming the system. It's about making sure Google understands what you do, where you do it, and that you're good at it. When that's set up properly, the right customers find you without you having to chase them.

What about local SEO?

Local SEO is the part of SEO that focuses on getting you found by people in your area. It's the reason some businesses show up on Google Maps and others don't.

For tradespeople, this is the big one. Most of your customers are within 20 miles of you. They search for things like "roofer near me" or "electrician in Manchester" and Google decides who to show. Local SEO is how you make sure it's you.

Google Maps

When someone searches "plumber near me", Google shows a map with three businesses. Getting into that top three is one of the biggest wins you can get.

Reviews

Google uses your reviews to decide how trustworthy your business is. More reviews (and better ones) means you show up higher and more people call you.

Local keywords

People search for things like "electrician in Leeds" or "emergency roofer Manchester". Your website needs to show Google that you serve those areas.

Why it matters

Your customers are already searching

The question isn't whether people are looking for tradespeople on Google. They are. The question is whether they're finding you or your competitors.

What you could see

More phone calls

People find you right when they need someone. They're not browsing, they're ready to hire. That means more calls from people who actually want the work done.

Less reliance on word of mouth

Word of mouth is great, but it's slow and unpredictable. SEO brings in new customers who have never heard of you but need exactly what you do.

Competing with bigger firms

A one-man band can outrank a national chain on Google if the website and Google profile are set up properly. It levels the playing field.
